Who We Are

Lancashire Probation Trust is a law enforcement agency protecting the public by ensuring the proper punishment and rehabilitation of offenders.  We are committed to working in partnership with other criminal justice agencies such as the Police, the Prison Service, the Courts, Crown Prosecution Service and Victim Support in order to reduce crime and promote community safety.

We are one of the 42 probation areas within England and Wales that form the National Probation Service and currently employ over 600 staff. Our staff work from 16 offices across the county and also within the six prisons, 12 Magistrates’ Courts and the two Crown Courts, which are situated in Preston and Burnley.

At any given time, Lancashire Probation Trust is supervising around 8,300 offenders. Around three quarters of these offenders are in the community, either on a community order or on a licence following their release from prison. The remaining quarter of offenders are in prison awaiting their release on licence.

We work to five objectives, which aim to protect all members of the community:

  • Protect the public
  • Enforce punishment of offenders
  • Uphold the interests of victims of crime
  • Reduce reoffending
  • Rehabilitate offenders to lead law-abiding lives
